Abstract
What does it mean to bring animals into politics? Various proposals have recently been made for the institutional representation and consideration of animals_ interests in human political decision-making processes. I argue, however, that humans must also learn to do politics with animals, and not just on their behalf. This requires (1) understanding animals' diverse forms of political agency; (2) exploring the role of humans in enabling rather than disabling those agencies; and (3) developing a plural model of overlapping and interdependent political jurisdictions to accommodate the complexity of human-animal political relationships and communities. I will consider in particular the case of the urban 'commons' shared by humans, domesticated and liminal animals.
