I am a plant enthusiast without a green thumb, and an explorer of medieval literature and devotional visuality. I often tend my plants to such a distress that only prayers seem left to offer. Yet with undiminished interest, I still open little green windows wherever life and space allow. Ever so much less than the glamourous legend, moonlight and bustle behind Eileen Chang’s midnight-blue window, mine opens to tilted pots and stubbornly alive plants looked after by a gardener more hopeful than skilled. I consider myself fortunate to be working in IEAS’ intellectual soil rich with climate, ecology, literature, and human concern. It offers me the space to keep planting and growing, and to keep imagining how medieval texts, images, and life of plants intertwine and illuminate my work and life.
